My Story
In 2022 our family faced something no parent ever expects.
My son Rowan, who was 12 at the time, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Suddenly our lives were filled with hospital visits, treatments and uncertainty. During that time we saw first-hand the incredible work done by Young Lives vs Cancer, supporting families navigating childhood cancer.
They provide practical help, emotional support and guidance when families need it most.
During Rowan’s treatment in Edinburgh we spent nine weeks living at Ciaran’s House, accommodation provided by Young Lives vs Cancer for families whose children are undergoing treatment far from home. Throughout the past few years we have continued to stay at Ciaran’s House on many occasions.
Having somewhere safe and supportive to stay during such a difficult time made an enormous difference for our family. It allowed us to focus on Rowan and getting through the treatment rather than worrying about where we were going to stay.
Our Young lives vs cancer social worker, Danisha is also fantastic. Danisha helped us in the beginning sorting out benefits and applying for Rowan's Blue badge, something we couldn't have managed. When Rowan was recovering from brain surgery in hospital she brought us frozen meals so we could eat. Another time when Rowan had a longer hospital stay than we expected, she bought pyjamas and underwear for him and also brought me my favourite chocolates!
Over the years Danisha has helped us get support to make some amazing memory making trips.
That support is one of the reasons I’m running the London Marathon 2027 for Young Lives vs Cancer.
Never in a million years would I have thought I'd ever do the London Marathon, but here I am, raising money for an amazing charity.
If you’re able to donate, even a small amount can help this incredible charity continue supporting children and families facing cancer.
Thank you so much for your support.
