About the Charity The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that takes young people aged 8-24 on sailing and outdoor adventures to inspire them to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer.
Get to know me
Im Enya Gibbs, 21 years old, and currently living in cowes. I study Sports Engineering at Loughborough University, and I love sailing.
Why I'm running
This charity lays close to my heart and a first hand example of how a sport can truely change lives. Sailing saved me and I want it to have that positive effect on others.
I’ve battled two tumours in my lifetime, one in my pituitary gland in my brain when I was 6- leaving my doctors telling my parents I would never speak properly (if you have ever heard my helming you would know they were very wrong).
Then in 2023 when I was 18 I was diagnosed with a tumour in my salivary gland (parotid gland). Although it could of been much worst, it truely changed my life. I was at university, far from home and pretty scared. Sailing was my outlet for those two years until I had it removed in early 20-25 through a surgical Superficial Partiodectomy at Leicester Royal Infirmary. I remember waking up and asking the doctor 3 things:
Was it cancerous?
Did you get it all out?
When can I go sailing?
Having my parotid tumour treated gave me a small understanding of just how hard it can be when you don’t really know what to do next or how to move forward. For me, sailing gave me something to focus on and a reason to keep going. It gave me a sense of freedom, purpose and helped me feel like myself again and a chance to give myself a sense of belonging within the amazing sailing community. I want to give this simular sense of freedom to more people going through these experiences!
The Challenge
Its no secret, I'm not a runner! I used to do triathlons when I was 11, and used to make excuses why I can't go to track training. This will be hard, but I'm not one to give up!
